GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality is working on resolving the problem of dirty and smelly water that has made life difficult for the owner of Ilitha Creche in Zone 9, Thembalethu, for over two years.
Creche owner Nombhasa Fulani says she has contacted the George Municipality to solve the problem of storm water that keeps damming up in front of her creche, however, the response has been rather slow.
She says the situation has led to many complaints from her customers as people throw rubbish, toxic and harmful substances in the water, leaving it smelly and unhealthy.
"This water is in front of my business and my business deals with children, some as young as six months old. Children often get sick and I sometimes lose customers," says Fulani.
Fulani asks the municipality to find a way of making a proper drainage system that will enable the water to flow and not dam in front of her premises.
Smelly storm water has been damming up in front of Ilitha Creche, posing health risks for the children.
Debra Sauer, George Municipal communications officer, says this matter is a long-standing problem and not a simple one to solve. The storm water dams up in the street because it cannot flow through the storm water channels - which is due to people dumping objects in the channels.
"The storm water cannot flow away because of the refuse that is dumped. The Civil Engineering Directorate cleanses the blockages regularly but the storm water just blocks again because of the bigger problem. A storm water team and the Councillor of the area, Buyiswa Mooi, went to the problem area on 4 June to investigate again."
Sauer said that the team would clean the channels and explain the causes of the problem to Fulani last Wednesday. According to Fulani, municipal workers were there on Wednesday, but no cleaning took place.
The filthy dammed-up water is right in front of Ilitha Creche.
