Update
GEORGE NEWS - The wildfire that has been burning in the Rondevlei area since yesterday, close to Pine Lake Marina just outside Sedgefield, has been contained.
According to Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) communications officer Herman Pieters, ground crew members from GRDM, Working on Fire (WoF) and SANParks are busy with mopping-up operations.
"They will continue with these activities for the rest of the afternoon and monitor for flare-ups of windy conditions of up to 40km/h," he said. "Crews will remain on high alert. Attempts will also be made to flush out all hotspots."
The fire was reported last night, and Knysna Fire & Rescue Department firefighters responded immediately. They requested assistance from GRDM firefighters who responded with two tankers and bakkies from GRDM. SANParks, South Cape Fire Protection Agency, WoF, and a private landowner have all helped in the firefighting efforts.
"Rain is expected to fall after 14:00 today and it will help firefighters to ensure that the Rondevlei area remains safe. SANParks ordered a tractor to create a firebreak to protect surrounding properties and heavily fuelled areas against possible fire ignition," Pieters said.
