GEORGE NEWS - Rachel Bertrand is George Herald's Braaibroodjie Master!
This mother of two won the title with the simplicity of her delicious cheesy recipe - using four different kinds of cheese - and combination of textures.
The runner-up is Angelique Reinhardt with her spicy secret ingredient, chilli cheese bombs; and Jackie Engelbrecht is in the third place with her beautiful presentation, complete with green figs and Camembert cheese.
Judges Sharlee Moriarty (strategic marketing manager at Group Editors), Allewijn Dippenaar, Memory Booysen (Garden Route District Mayor) and Lizette da Silva (George Herald editor) had a feast of braaibroodjies to choose from, made with care and ingenious products.
The other two finalists were Leigh-Carren Whittaker and Linda Willers.
The winners walked away smiling broadly and the judges looked equally pleased with their pleasant task.

Rachel Bertrand received four lovely prizes: two nights at Beyond the Moon (Wilderness); Jakkalsvlei gift box; Van Rensburgs Food voucher and an Eden MediSpa voucher.
Runner-up Angelique Reinhardt received a Hussar Grill voucher; Van Rensburgs Food voucher and Rein Lifestyle and Beauty voucher.
Third-placed Jackie Engelbrecht received a Spur voucher and Rein Lifestyle and Beauty voucher.
Four of the finalist's recipes:
Leigh-Carren Whittaker’s braaibroodjie
Ingredients:
- Albany bread white / brown 1st recipe
- Garlic butter or Marmite cream cheese spread
- Cheese cheddar, mozzarella and feta cheese
- Grilled onions with mushrooms
- Tomatoes
2nd recipe
- Bread ciabatta
- Garlic butter
- Cheese and roast veggies
Angelique Reinhardt: Angi’s BOMB braaibroodjie
Ingredients
- Bread
- Margarine
- Cream cheese (optional)
- Tomatoes
- Caramelized onions
- Diced bacon bits
- 3 – 4 Chillie cheese bombs
- Bushveld braai peri–peri sauce (optional)
Method
- In a pan, caramelize your onions
- Spread Margarine on the outside of the bread slices.
- Spread cream cheese as the first layer of your braaibroodjie.
- Layer tomatoes to your liking.
- Stack caramelized onions onto the tomatoes.
- Throw some bacon bits on.
- Stack the 3-4 cheese bombs, add some Peri-Peri sauce and close the bread.
- Braai and enjoy!!!
Jackie Engelbrecht se braaibroodjie
Bestandele:
- Ciabatta-broodjie
- Botter
- Basil Pesto
- Mozzarellakaas
- Camembert-kaas
- Rooi uie
- Tamaties - enige soort wat jy verkies
- Vars Basil
- Sout en swart peper
- Klein bietjie vyestroop / gouestroop
Metode
- Sny broodjie oop en smeer bietjie botter en heelwat Basil Pesto aan beide kante.
- Volgende kom die Mozzarellakaas en skywe Camembert-kaas
- Dan gevolg deur rooi ui, tamaties en vars Basil
- Sout en peper
- Nog ‘n laag Mozzarella en Camembert
- Nou is dit reg om te braai oor matige kole totdat broodjie “crispy” buite is en kaas lekker gesmelt.
- Sny broodjie in skywe of net middeldeur en dip met bietjie vyestroop of gouestroop.
- Geniet!
Linda Willers se “all time ultimate”-braaibroodjie
Bestandele:
- Woolworths English muffins (klaar voorberei), soveel soos benodig. Hierdie is so lekker, ons maak sommer as ons begin twee vir elkeen.
- Vars opgekapte knoffel
- Smeer lagie sour cream and chives maaskaas
- Tamatieskywe (indien verkies kan tamatie met skyfies green fig preserve vervang word)
- Growwe sout en gemaalde swartpeper
- Mengsel van gerasperde cheddar en mozzarella kaas
- Gekarmeliseerde rooi uie (met rooi wyn en bruin suiker)
- 2- 3 skyfies Camembert-kaas
- Gedroogde orgiganum
- Halveer muffins en smeer lekker regte egte botter op beide kante.
Metodes
- Plaas volgende bestandele in volgorde hier bo op die onderste muffin.
- Maak English muffin toe en braai tot al die kaas lekker gesmelt het.
- Nie te vinnIg en te warm kole nie.
- Bedien met vars roket!!!
