GEORGE NEWS - The Western Cape Standing Committee on Local Government will hold its third public hearing into the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill, 2015, in George tonight, 16 April from 18:00 to 20:00.
The Khoi-San communities (that include the Cape Khoi, Griqua, Nama, Korana and San people) and other relevant stakeholders and entities are invited to the hearing and to make written and oral submissions.
Among others, the purpose of the Bill is to make provision for the recognition of the Khoi-San, to effect consequential amendments to other laws, while also consolidating and repealing the National House of Traditional Leaders Act 2009 and the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act 2003.
Masizole Mnqasela, MPP and chairperson of the Standing Committee on Local Government, said that it is vital that the first inhabitants of not only the Western Cape as it is known today, but also the country be recognised.
The hearing will take place at the Banquet Hall of the George Civic Centre.
