GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - At the George Hospital and Mediclinic George, the invaluable role that nurses play in our community was celebrated on International Nurses Day on Tuesday 12 May.
The threat of the Covid-19 pandemic has put the critical role of nurses in society right at the centre of the spotlight.
At Mediclinic, the nursing managers donned aprons, lit a few primuses and baked pancakes for their colleagues to make them feel appreciated and special. Hospital manager Kassie Karstens said it is in times like the present that the selfless work of nursing staff is appreciated more than ever.
"A nurse always just wants to serve and this can today also be seen in the kind gesture of the nursing management. Each of our nurses are the guests of honour for the day, but also for the rest of the year. I want to honour everyone at Mediclinic George, Geneva and the Neuro Clinic."
Western Cape Health district spokesperson for the Garden Route and Little Karoo Nadia Ferreira said although they could not hold a function for their nurses because of the social distancing rule, nurses said the pledge and everyone received something delicious to eat.

In a special message to nurses, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the nation owe their well-being to the untiring commitment of nurses.
"Currently, nurses are placing themselves between our communities and the unseen enemy we face in Covid-19. We are humbled by their bravery, their hard work and their commitment to putting the interests of all South Africans before their own and those of their own families."
