GEORGE NEWS - Garden Route SPCA's day clinic opened on Thursday 2 August at a ceremony which honoured the woman who made the clinic possible, Aletta Rall. The day clinic is situated at the SPCA premises in Ossie Urban Road.
"Today is a red letter day for Garden Route SPCA," said manager Frieda Jansen van Rensburg at the opening ceremony.
"This clinic was on our wish list for years. People kept pitching up on our doorstep with injured and sick animals and our reception area was often overflowing. It was a huge problem because some of the animals were very sick and possibly contagious. Then along came the legacy left to us by Aletta Rall - it seemed heaven-sent. Because of one woman's love for animals and her bequest, we were able to build our clinic, which is for the poor who cannot afford private vets."
Animals whose owners cannot afford to go to a vet will be treated at nominal rates. She said that, while at the clinic, the owners will also be educated about correct animal care.
"A huge thank you to all the businesses that were involved in building the clinic. We are grateful to everyone who donated items and services or reduced the costs thereof," said Van Rensburg.
The following businesses were thanked: Province lighting in Cape Town, Rob and Cheryll Bourke of Awnings and Blinds, Mutual Safes, manager of McNeil Dieter Kellerman, Gideon Henning Draughting Services, Clive Jacobs of CD Jacobs Construction, Hendrik de Waal's Blacksmith Studio, Tile Africa, Eco tanks in PE, DMS Structures, Mustrade, Terblanche Transport, Garry Geweld of Wilderness Electricians, JM Plumbing, De Kaap Meubels, Mobicast, Morné Lochner from Norgariver Nursery, Outeniqua Palms, Van Rensburg foods and Sandwich Shop.
Committee members Marius de Waal and Joey Sellner were specially thanked for getting donations and overseeing the building of the clinic.
The clinic is open from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 13:00 for walk-ins and between 14:00 and 16:00 for appointments only. The phone number is 071 658 7353.
