GEORGE NEWS - Khumbulelo Mkhondo from Lawaaikamp has taken over as the new African Independent Congress (AIC) propositional representative councillor on the George Municipal Council following the resignation of Abel Kiwit as AIC councillor late last year.
Mkhondo, known by peers as Bra Joe, is a former member of the African National Congress (ANC). He was a member for many years and also served as councillor in 2000 before joining the AIC in the last local government elections.
"Like anyone who is dissatisfied with their political home and feel there's nothing they can do to change it, I decided to jump ship and find a new political home, which is the AIC. I can relate to this party as it offers many practical fresh ideas," said Mkhondo.
Mkhondo, who has also worked at the George Municipality as a senior electrician before retiring in 2015, said the main area of focus is skills development. He wants to see many young people and unemployed persons acquire the skills that will enable them to find jobs.
"I am appealing to people to give me a chance. I bring in a new style of leadership that's people-oriented and distinctive from my predecessor. I ask all those who lost hope in the party to please come back. Let us rebuild the organisation once again. I will support anyone who is promoting development projects that are inclusive. I am open to new ideas, I have an open door policy and anyone can come and talk to me," he said.
Mkhondo also encouraged people to go and vote in their numbers in the upcoming elections.
