GEORGE NEWS and VIDEO - To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Marikana tragedy that left 34 miners dead, at least 70 injured and a further 250 arrested when police opened fire during a mining strike‚ local youth activist Hein Scheepers planted 34 white crosses on an open piece of land next to George High School yesterday.
"I am a grassroots activist and I am making a social awareness statement," he said.
The shooting occurred on a koppie near the Lonmin Platinum mine in the North West province on 16 August 2012.
