GEORGE NEWS - A pedestrian lost his leg after yet another accident on the notorious R102 old airport road Tuesday afternoon.
The road was closed for several hours in both directions following the collision between a truck and a stationary bakkie at approximately 16:30.
According to information, the driver of the bakkie had stopped to pick up people when the truck hit the bakkie from behind. It is believed the pedestrian got caught in the middle while trying to climb on to the back of the bakkie. The truck driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.
According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the pedestrian sustained serious leg injuries as his leg was already partially amputated when paramedics arrived on the scene. Emergency personnel had to use the jaws of life to rescue the truck driver from the wreckage.
The road was closed for several hours while mopping-up operations were taking place. The truck driver sustained critical injuries and was transported to George Hospital by Eden911 paramedics.
ER24 paramedics transported the other patient.
At the time of going to print, no new information regarding the patient's well-being had been received.
