GEORGE NEWS - After providing a medical backup service at the 2018 Expedition Africa held in the Namaqua and West Coast area, Jeanne Williams, an intermediate life support medic with Firstcare Wildfire Support (FWS) George, was voted as the 'best medic' at a prize-giving in the category for international medical teams. Similarly, her team was rated 'the best medical team' after their involvement in the May 2018 Expedition Africa Adventure Racing World circuit from which they returned on Sunday 27 May after a gruelling trip.
Christo Theron, operational director at FWS, says that this was by far the busiest and toughest Expedition Africa that he has been on.
Expedition Africa (EA) is an extreme adventure racing event and forms part of the Adventure Racing World Series. Competitors tackle a gruelling 500km race comprising mountain biking, trekking and kayaking activities. There is no demarcated route and participants have to find their way using a map and compass. It is a non-stop race and teams take a break where ever they can on the route. Top teams finish the course in about three days and the last teams take up to seven days.
Theron says he is immensely proud of his team as well as Charlene Theron, FWS financial director, for her support and sacrifice in making this winning team.
Three years ago FWS, a George volunteer organisation, was asked to provide medics for Expedition Africa Garden Route. The medical team comprised three members from FWS and one from Synergi Medix (based in Gauteng). They did such an amazing job that they were asked to provide the medical support again in 2017 in the Eastern Cape.
