GEORGE NEWS - A concerned citizen has raised questions about the closure of a public toilet in the central business district near Shoprite, as well as the cleaning of the remaining toilet facility in the area.
The cleaning of the toilets in Syferfontein was also a point of concern for the complainant, who wishes to know why George Municipality doesn't provide flush toilets in the settlement.
Senior communications officer Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe provided the following comment:
"The public men's toilet was locked due to vandalism and maintenance. The facility is currently open for all to use. According to the cleansing department, the public toilets near Shoprite are cleaned daily with the use of appropriate cleaning material and tools.
"The cleansing department also confirmed that employees are issued with the necessary protective clothing needed to perform their duties.
"The toilets in Syferfontein are cleaned regularly (twice per week). The George Municipality cannot provide flush toilets in the settlement as we cannot connect to the sewer network.
"We have not received any complaints recently regarding the chemical toilets in the area. The municipality is in the process of procuring a service provider to install an alternative sanitation solution to replace the chemical toilets."
