GEORGE NEWS - George Fire and Rescue Station Commander Johann Crouse said it was a good New Year's Day on beaches in its jurisdiction with people generally well-behaved and calm.
Beaches were packed but without any major incidents.
Two people in two separate incidents were rescued at Herolds Bay and Leentjiesklip Wilderness. At Herolds Bay the municipality's jetski team and beach lifeguards responded to a man who was swept out on the current. The jetski crew kept him calm until a lifeguard arrived who swam the man out safely to shore. The jetski followed up on reports of a second 'drowning' which turned out to be dead seal floating in the water. At Leentjiesklip a man was safely swum in by Wilderness lifeguards.
The municipality thanks the lifeguards for their excellent response and commitment on all the beaches - Victoria Bay, Herolds Bay, Wilderness, Leentjiesklip (also Wilderness area), Touws River Lagoon and Gwaing. The municipality also thanks the people on the beaches for their co-operation and good spirit.
