GEORGE NEWS - Five people were hospitalised on Friday 4 October after a small truck overturned near the turn-off to Waboomskraal on the Outeniqua Pass.
According to the owner (39) of the truck, a Nissan Cabstar, the prop shaft broke and the truck overturned.
"I remember hitting the windscreen and waking up in hospital," he told the George Herald earlier this week. No other vehicles were involved.
The driver and his passenger sustained serious injuries including bone and skull fractures and were transported to the George Hospital by ER24. The three passengers, who were hitching a ride to George, were taken to hospital by Eden911 with moderate injuries.
In another incident on Saturday night, a drunk driver (in his early 20s) was arrested after an accident in Beukes Street, Pacaltsdorp.
The driver lost control of his white Nissan vehicle, flattened a hedge and narrowly missed the Heyns family's home. The car went straight through the yard, passing underneath a big low-hanging branch and hitting a washing line pole before crashing into the back wall.
The owner's son, Anwill Heyns, said the section of the house that the car passed, is his mother's bedroom.
"The corner he missed is where her bed is. It could have been serious. I heard a loud sound outside, saw lights passing and heard the crash at the back. When I went outside, the driver and his two young cousins were still in the car. He smelled strongly of alcohol and was very apologetic," said Heyns. The suspect was arrested on the scene.
