GEORGE NEWS - An elderly man (70) from Wilderness sustained minor first-degree burn wounds after his house in Die Vleie Road was razed to the ground on Wednesday 13 September shortly after 12:00.
According to George Municipality’s Senior Communications Officer Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, the municipality’s fire services received a call about the fire at 12:13.
George Fire Services also responded to the call with a 30 000-litre water tanker and an incident command vehicle.
“Unfortunately, when we arrived on scene the house was already fully alight. The structure that burned was a double-storey residential structure that belonged to an elderly couple who lost everything they owned in this unfortunate event.
"The fire was brought under control at approximately 13:40 and mop-up operations commenced,” said Mangqwengqwe.
It is believed that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, however, this will be confirmed once the investigation is complete.
No other injuries were reported.
The fire brigade on scene. Unfortunately the house was completely destroyed.
