The opening marks another achievement in the provincial government’s commitment to bring quality health services closer to the people of George.
According to Mr Botha, the upgrade of George Hospital is now almost complete: “The last phase, the construction of the psychiatry ward, will go out to tender soon and the estimated time of completion is mid-2013.”
Construction of the emergency centre commenced in June 2011, at a cost of R8 million for the infrastructure, and an additional R2.4 million for the equipment, forming part of the R121 million refurbishment of George Hospital.
Features of the centre include:
- 4 resuscitation beds.
- 10 examination beds.
- A new digital X-ray machine.
- An 8-bed overnight observation ward.
- An improved waiting area and family counselling room.
- A Thuthuzela Care Centre for victims of sexual violence.
