GEORGE NEWS - Before this year is out, Georgians and residents of the Southern Cape will be spoilt for choice when 40 new venues will have been added to their shopping menu under one roof at the Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre.
The second phase of the development is shooting up at a fast tempo a stone's throw away from the Garden Route Mall and the first shop, Sportsman's Warehouse, will open its doors on 24 March.
Loot Steyn, a director of Laritza Investments, developers of the centre, took the George Herald for a quick visit to the bustling building site where the 1 700m² Sportsman's Warehouse premises was almost ready for the retailer to move in.
The big opening day for the remainder of the development is 29 October and the premises for the biggest tenant, Checkers Hyper (occupying 8 500m²), must be finished by end July. This will give them 90 days to prepare for D-day.
"We are excited about the progress and have some keen interest from tenants. We know that 60% of visitors to the Garden Route Mall are from outside George. With schools being the target market of Sportsman's Warehouse, we expect that even larger numbers will be attracted to the city after their opening, and more so once the whole centre is trading," said Steyn.
"Shoppers come from as far as Victoria West to do their monthly shopping at the Garden Route Mall."
Shops that Georgians can expect to see in Eden Meander include House and Home, Mambo's Plastic Warehouse, branches of the Cattle Baron and John Dory's restaurant chains, a second branch of PNA and an upgraded store of Golden Harvest. The Pro Shop, currently housed next to the Glenwood short golf course, will be opening a second shop next to Sportsman's Warehouse. Jayde Tannus, one of The Pro Shop partners, said the Eden Meander branch will be the biggest golf store in the Southern Cape and will feature state-of-the-art custom fitting equipment, with three fitment centres and a virtual golf simulator aimed at the discerning golfer.
Eden Meander will have several entry points: one from the first roundabout at the Garden Route Mall entrance, a second at the Builder's Warehouse roundabout, another behind Imperial Motors and a fourth from Blue Mountain's side.
A service road will run along the northern facade parallel with Knysna Road and that area will be beautified with a dam and gardens.
Steyn complimented Marsilio Projects for the pace at which they are building despite encountering numerous rain days. "Lots of overtime has gone into this project."
Construction on the R300-million development began last year and will offer 28 708m² of shopping and other lifestyle offerings.
