GEORGE NEWS - The Sikhula Sonke Cooperation received assistance from George Municipality with their initiative to eliminate illegal dumping sites in Thembalethu.
Their aim is to turn dumping sites into gardens and play parks for children.
The organisation recently received garden tools, masks and gloves from the municipality's cleaning department in aid of their project.
The organisation uses some of the materials they find at the dumping sites to upcycle and re-use materials, building benches. In turn the municipality removes all the rubble the organisation does not use for recycling.
They started the first phase of the operation on Friday 23 August, when the group cleaned the first dumping site at All Bricks Community Hall, Tabata Street in Thembalethu.
The cleaning process, planting of flower gardens and the building of parks is a work in progress. Sikhula Sonke must still put chairs and benches made of recycled plastic containers on the premises.
If people have plants or compost they can donate to this worthy cause. Please e-mail Lunga Pieters at lunga8520@gmail.com.
