GEORGE NEWS - The man who drowned at the Gwaiing river mouth on Saturday 17 October has been identified as Lorenzo Smith (23) from Parkdene.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, Smith and his friends were partying at the river mouth when he went for a swim. “The tide was apparently very high,” he said.
Smith got into trouble in the water and was dragged under by the strong current and disappeared completely under the water.
“Police were alerted at approximately 15:40,” said Pojie. “NRSI rescue swimmers managed to recover the body from the sea during their search, after which they handed him over to the police diving unit. He was declared dead by paramedics on scene and his body was removed by Forensic Pathology Services.
"An autopsy will be conducted during the week to determine the exact cause of death.”
