GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Never in her wildest dreams did the local school teacher Catherine Byrnes imagine that her baby shower would take place in a car park near her flat.
Byrnes, a teacher at Holy Cross Preprimary, was under the impression she had to fetch something from her car at Shamrock Place car park on Saturday afternoon and was surprised to find her colleagues driving past one by one, handing her their gifts through their car windows.
The group of women followed an international trend to celebrate a special occasion within the regulations of Covid-19.
Deveney Fember, Catherine's flatmate and colleague, organised the event. The secret was well kept from Catherine and her partner Freginald Africa, a former SWD rugby player.
Fember said the staff traditionally have their baby showers at the school, but unusual times call for unusual measures.
Colleague Bessie Engelbrecht's advice to the couple is to make sure they get enough sleep before the baby arrives.
Catherine and Freginald are expecting the arrival of their daughter, Chloe, next Monday, 18 May.
