GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - See a wonderful display of blooming orchids at the Presbyterian church hall, Caledon Street, George, from 28 to 30 September.
The hall is just behind the George library and near to the George museum.
Orchid Society members will do individual displays using the theme Palette of Orchids.
Their landscape or other displays will be judged and the winner will receive a trophy. Stands are judged according to interpretation of the theme and variety of orchids used.
Individual plants will also be judged by Hendrik van der Hoven, a Cape Town orchid judge who has recently relocated to Wilderness. He will be assisted by three learner judges Scott, Gladys and Fiona from the Garden Route area.
There will be a champion, a reserve champion and a class winner in each category.
Admission is R10 for adults, children under 12 years are free. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door – the prize this year is for a blooming standard size Cymbidium with two spikes on it. There will be a second and third prize.
Opening times are 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday and Friday, and 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturday. This will allow working people to pop into the show after businesses close on Saturday.
Potting demonstrations will be held on Thursday at 10:30 (Cymbidiums) and 15:00 (Cattleyas), Friday 10:30 (Cattleyas) and 15:00 (Phalaenopsis), and Saturday at 10:30 (Cymbidiums) and 13:00 (Phalaenopsis).
These demonstrations are very popular so do come early to get a good seat.
Potting mix and fertilisers will be sold at the show. There will always be a society member available to give advice to members of the public.
Society members will have a stand selling plants, and Outeniqua Orchids will have a selection of blooming Cymbidiums and a wide variety of other genera for sale.
Refreshments will be available.
