GEORGE NEWS - On Wednesday 25 May, Holy Cross Primary celebrated the official opening of its newly enclosed pool facility.
Principal Jane Askew and her staff, together with Sister Flora Matavire, the owner's representative on the governing body, warmly welcomed district director of the Eden and Central Karoo Education Department (Ecked) Jewel Jonkers, circuit manager Gerhard Ackerman, SGB chairpersons Jannie van der Westhuizen and Charl Marais, as well as dignitaries and friends of Holy Cross to celebrate a dream that had finally been realised.
This state-of-the-art building is a multi-purpose facility with a heated pool.
The 25m outdoor pool engineered in the 1980s by Charles Rowe has been well-utilised, but limited to the few short summer months here in George.
When Askew became principal ten years ago, she wished to ensure that every child who leaves Holy Cross in Grade 7 is water safe, and can swim confidently and competently. She set a goal to enclose the pool to be able to use it throughout the year.

"The facility will not only benefit the Holy Cross community, but the whole community of George," said Askew in her speech.
Amidst numerous challenges over the past two years, the aquatic centre became operational.
Chris Klue, a past parent and fundraiser for the pool project, was the architect. His design exceeded all expectations.
Special mention was made of all those who contributed to the fundraising and for turning a dream into a reality for the children.
