GEORGE NEWS - Celebrations of Africa Youth Day, Sunday 1 November, will be led in George by the social enterprise creative platform Guidy Worx, with the support of George Municipality.
According to organiser Hein Scheepers, it will be held at the George Market Theatre from 12:00 till 17:00.
It will include the screening of a film by Nadine Cloete about the life of freedom fighter Ashley Kriel, Action Kommandant, at 13:30, to be followed by a discussion.
There will also be special guests including designer Austin Lee and PhD candidate Monique van Vuuren. "Africa Unite, an NGO based in Cape Town, is also supporting the event and three peer educators are coming down from Cape Town," says Scheepers. "After the screening there will be a 30- to 40-minute discussion followed by live performances by the likes of MusiSean, Janice Hoffman, Ego Nege and more professional artists.
"We will also have a prize-giving open mic session for rappers and poets."
Scheepers trusts that this collaboration will lead to more vibrant creative developmental programmes that will empower the youth and communities of the George, Garden Route and the Western Cape with skills towards driving entrepreneur-ship and income opportunities.
In 2019, the chairperson of the African Union Commission launched the 1 Million by 2021 Initiative, which aims to create direct opportunities for one million young Africans in the fields of education, employment, entrepreneurship and engagement.
At the very core of the initiative are the principles of pan-Africanism, strategic partnerships and Africa-centric innovation and solutions, co-created and driven by Africa's youth, towards creating sustainable structures.
Scheepers says it will be the fourth year that Guidy Worx leads the celebrations.
