GEORGE NEWS - Back in 1968, Mr Felix Harris who was long-time chairman of the George Society of Arts at that stage, initiated the purchase of the building currently known as the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre.
It was bought for R12 000 and another R14 000 was spent on converting the building into our beloved theatre.
There have been many revamps over the years with the most notable ones being the Backstage Lounge project, as well as an auditorium upgrade managed by the theatre's biggest sponsor, Oakhurst Insurance.
The building, built in 1905 in the Neo-Cape Dutch style, was originally founded by Christina van Niekerk-Meyer and was known as the "First Class Public School for Girls". To this day, the building is still the property of the George Society of Arts, currently in its 71st year, one of the longest existing societies in the Garden Route.
The George Arts Theatre is celebrating its 50th birthday with a gala event on 6 April. For more info call 044 874 3142.
