GEORGE NEWS - The vigilance of a police member who attended a motor vehicle accident between Herold and Uniondale on the N9 in the early hours of Sunday morning, 6 December, has led to the arrest of four suspects after two firearms and ammunition were found among their luggage.
The four are aged between 42 and 28.
The four suspects were occupants of a Toyota sedan that was travelling towards Uniondale on the N9 when the driver lost control and the car left the road and overturned. All four sustained slight injuries and were transported to the George Hospital via ambulance.
Whilst attending to the motor accident scene, the police member in attendance noticed suspicious behaviour on the side of the suspects and alerted his colleagues on duty in George to check their luggage as soon as they reach the George Hospital.
When the suspects arrived in George, their luggage was thoroughly checked. Members discovered two 9mm pistols and ammunition in their possession, as well as a number of live rounds. The firearms and ammunition were confiscated and the four suspects were arrested.
The suspects have been charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and are in custody at the George police holding cells. They are scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate’s court today, Monday, 7 December.
