GEORGE NEWS - The 10th Funda Mzantzi that took place the whole of last week at Eden Church Hall was a celebration of note. Reading clubs came from far and wide to show off their abilities in reviewing, impromptu reading, spelling bees and debating.
However, the week was shrouded in sadness after a teacher from the Northern Cape drowned at Victoria Bay on Wednesday 25 September.
For the duration of the week, the different language groups convened at different venues to compete against each other. There were 11 groups: Afrikaans, English, IsiXhosa, IsiZulu, IsiNdebele, Tsivenda, Xitsonga, Siswati, Setswana, Sesotho and Sepedi.
On Friday the winners for each language were announced, with individual winners receiving trophies and group winners a trophy and medals - but not before the judges gave the teams their reviews and tips for improving for next year's event.
The placings for reading in Afrikaans were Ikwekwezi (1st), Literate (2nd) and Buffaloes (3rd). For the book reviews Ikwekwezi was first again with Ipeleng second and Sol Plaatjies third.
The winners in the debate group were Siyanqoba, with Cheetahs second and Movers and Shakers third.
