Update

GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Wildfire management efforts continue across the Garden Route, with progress reported in key areas. 

According to the latest update received from the Garden Route District Municipality, the wildfire at Jongensfontein remains contained, whilst at Swartberg pass the fire continues to exhibit active lines in inaccessible mountainous areas.

• "Jongensfontein (Hessequa Municipal Area): The wildfire remains contained. Crews made excellent progress in flushing perimeter lines, with no significant hotspots remaining. All smoldering heaps along the firebreaks will be addressed today, with the objective of scaling down resources and advancing toward closing out this incident. It is important to note that there are unburnt areas well within the perimeter deemed safe. These areas may still produce smoke due to wind and heat; however, the wildfire remains contained.
• "Swartberg Pass (De Kombuys & Koos Raubenheimer Dam, Oudtshoorn Municipal Area): The wildfire, with flanks above De Kombuys and Koos Raubenheimer Dam, continues to exhibit active lines in inaccessible mountainous areas. Trigger lines have been placed north of the De Hoek and De Kombuys infrastructure, which remains safe under current conditions. If the wildfire reaches the trigger lines, actions outlined in this Incident Action Plan will be implemented.

"Garden Route District Municipality Fire & Rescue Services will join the Incident Management Team during this operational period to assist with planning and readiness.

"Role players collaborating in current operations alongside GRDM Fire & Rescue Services include Hessequa Municipality Fire & Rescue Services, Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (SCFPA), Working on Fire & Kishugu (Ground Operations), CapeNature, and GRDM Fire Volunteers.

"Should you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or send a WhatsApp message to 081 709 5193."
