Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - According to the Garden Route District Municipality, fire activity on the Jongensfontein wildfire was minimal following aerial and specialist interventions to manage a new wildfire that ignited yesterday, 27 December. Two successful counter burns were made to reinforce the most critical containment lines.
"Although a favorable drizzle made landfall yesterday, the GRDM night shift crew remained on-site throughout the evening to monitor the situation, and fire activity was minimal.
"Today's efforts will involve GRDM crews from George and Riversdale, along with Working on Fire (WoF) teams arranged by GRDM and Hessequa Municipality. A tractor and/or bulldozer will also be used to strengthen critical control lines.
"The crews will focus on mopping up and securing perimeter lines on both the eastern and western fronts. If wind conditions are favorable, an additional burn-out line may be implemented on the eastern side to enhance containment.
"Role players at the scene for the day include: GRDM Fire and Rescue Services, Hessequa Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, Working on Fire Ground Crews, Working on Fire/Kishugu Aviation, Savannah Helicopters and GRDM Firefighting Volunteers.
"Should you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or send a WhatsApp message to 081 709 5193."
