National elections: The early birds make their marks

GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEOS - At long last National Election Day arrived today, Wednesday 29 May.

Georgians too are visiting voting stations across the region.

Early birds have been casting their votes since 07:00 today.

The stations will be open until 21:00.

Voters arrived early at Denneoord Primary, with a queue snaking around the very full parking area. The mood is jolly and strangers are chatting everywhere about the elections today.

Most of the voters said, when asked, that they are voting to make a difference. "Things can't go on like this," said Renier Claassen. "We want to see change."

Kiesers het van voor 07:00 af by die stemlokaal by Heidedal Primêre Skool in Borcherds tougestaan om hul stem uit te bring. Die lokaal het 'n paar minute laat oopgemaak, maar stemmery verloop nou vlot.

Die raadslid vir die wyk, Christo Alexander, was onder die eerste kiesers wat hul kruisies getrek het. Hy sê hy is baie opgewonde oor vandag want die land het positiewe verandering broodnodig.

The spirit of election is high in Conville, Pienaar Street, with music and colourful stalls of a variety of political parties. The Patriotic Alliance is especially loud and clear with their juke box and vibe.

DA Councillor Brendon Adams said they've been busy with special votes since Monday, and that they are ready for the voters in Conville. It is a public holiday, therefore more voters are expected during the course of the day.
