GEORGE NEWS - A 27-year-old man was shot and killed in Tabata Street, Thembalethu, at about 21:50 on Monday 19 February.
The incident happened close to his home in the nearby informal settlement.
The victim was allegedly accosted by a group of men and sustained multiple gunshot wounds (at least 10).
He was declared dead by medical personnel who attended the scene.
Rumours that the incident relates to extortion whereby shop owners are forced to pay so-called protection money monthly, have been doing the rounds. This could however not be confirmed by police.
A friend of the deceased was allegedly also shot and killed at his home in Thembalethu late last year.
This information could also not be confirmed by the police. "The motive and allegations made cannot be confirmed at this stage, [as they] form part of the ongoing investigation," said provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Malcolm Pojie.
