GEORGE NEWS - The investigation into the fatal crash at Kaaimans Pass that claimed the life of Gregory ‘Greg’ Fareed Rhode (38) in March 2025 is ongoing, with the matter still under consideration by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
According to Garden Route district police communication and liaison commander Lt Col Malcolm Pojie, an initial charge of culpable homicide was brought against the 27-year-old driver of a Toyota Hilux following the accident on Thursday night, 13 March.
A charge of driving under the influence was also registered at the time. The driver of the Hilux is believed to have ties with a local restaurant.
“The case docket was recently received back from the NPA with instructions,” said Pojie.
“Once finalised, it will be returned and submitted for a final decision. Meanwhile, the investigation continues.”
Rhode, a well-known DJ from Touwsranten, was on his way to work when the crash occurred. He was the family’s breadwinner and had worked in clubs in George for the past 20 years.
His widow, Danielle Rhode, paid a heartfelt tribute to her husband, describing him as a devoted partner and an exceptional father to their son, Jay-Sean.
“Greg was my everything. We were together for 21 years,” she said. “From Grade 1 until he died, he never missed a single one of our son’s rugby matches. We did everything together. Now waking up is painful.”
Rhode’s mother, Susan Fredericks, described her son as a caring and inspirational figure who was always there when needed.
“He helped many young people and had a gentle heart. He will be remembered for his laughter, his kindness and the remarkable person he was,” she said.
