Sharon Coetzee (middle) says she is allergic to preservatives and at Deeghuys lots of products are preservative free. Leomy van Wyk (left), the store manager, was smiling when Renette Smith (right) told her that she loves baking and using the ready made dough gives her more time to indulge in her favourite pastime. At the back is Chef Nic van Wyk, owner of Bistro 13 in Stellenbosch and judge on Kokkedoor, who demonstrated his skills at the store opening.
GEORGE BUSINESS NEWS - This holiday season visitors to the Southern Cape are in for a pleasant surprise as the quality, variety and availa-bility of food on offer in the area is set to increase dramatically.
The talk of the town is Deeghuys, a self-proclaimed "pleasure food store" for 'foodies' that has opened in the Garden Route Mall. Deeghuys is a refreshing new type of business that sells an extensive range of frozen food products of the highest quality that, when prepared, will surprise not only you but the finest food fundi among your family and friends.
Originally the plan was to bring fresh bread to the breakfast table, which eventually turned into something much bigger. Imagine all kinds of breads (focaccias, ciabattas, Portuguese rolls, garlic breads, Chelsea buns, subs, rolls, vetkoek, baguettes, whole wheat buns), a large selection of muffin and cupcake batters and pastries (sweet and savoury croissants, spring rolls, custard Danish bites, doughnuts, pies and puff pastry) to choose from.
They also sell round and rectangular pizza bases, sponge cakes and cupcakes, cookie dough, frosting, tart bases and incredible tart fillings including milk tart, lemon meringue, caramel and apple.
The secret is that almost all the products are pre-prepared and frozen, but the Deeghuys' little tricks with the freezing point gives customers the luxury to bake wonderful goodies at home whenever they like. That's the beauty of what Deeghuys is; it is about catering for unexpected guests and impressing with your pastry skills. It's baking a little treat within 12min or 'whipping' up a dozen croissants for breakfast.
Leomy van Wyk, the store manager, said, "Everyone must visit the store situated opposite Standard Bank so that they can be ready to impress when the rush begins."
