Distinctly different from traditional commercial gyms, a CrossFit 'box', as these spaces are called, offers intense and constantly varied workouts, adjusted to accommodate all. CrossFit is a community, the activities are fun, challenging, performance based and measurable. The competition is with yourself and you are guaranteed to get stronger and fitter, both physically and mentally.
CrossFit was founded in the US in 2000 by Greg Glassman, and there are now over 9 000 affiliated CrossFit gyms around the world. CrossFit.com explains that CrossFit is, quite simply, 'the sport of fitness'. "We've learned that harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport or game yields an intensity that cannot be matched by other means. The magic is in the movements. All of CrossFit's workouts are based on functional movements. These are the core movements of life, found everywhere, and built naturally into our DNA."
CrossFit George belongs to two young men well known in this area. Ross McMillan and Glen Addicott, prominent members of the SWD Cricket squad, both equally committed to the principles and philosophy of CrossFit, are ready to share these with the people of the Southern Cape. It is a very family-orientated place, and Franji and Jesse (Ross and Glen's wives) are very involved in the running of the business.
Ross's (captain SWD Cricket) excitement is palpable as he explains that the workouts are intense, in line with the CrossFit adage of 'Constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements', but that CrossFit is not about egos and pumping iron. It is, he says, "For everyone; it ensures that we stay strong and move well. We want our box to be a place where we help people of all ages get fitter." Glen is quick to add, "We believe in fitness, and to achieve that we will help our members to move well, to understand about fitness, and to understand the importance of nutrition."
CrossFit George opened its doors on Saturday.
The 'box' is well kitted out and is a very welcoming space for people of all ages and fitness abilities. Inside CrossFit George is 'The Banting Bar', which serves great coffee and delicious, healthy food prepared with followers of the Banting (Tim Noakes) Diet in mind. You are encouraged to come and see what CrossFit is all about, and to book a free, no obligation introductory session to try it out.
