BUSINESS NEWS - CBD is taking the global health community by storm, popping up in pharmacies and health shops in the form of CBD-infused gels, lotions, supplements and oils.
The Centre for Medicinal Cannabis estimates that there are roughly six million users of CBD in the UK alone and sales are expected to exceed one billion pounds a year by 2025.
But what exactly is this miracle panacea and why has it been getting so much attention lately?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of hundreds of compounds in the cannabis plant known as “cannabinoids,” which are also naturally produced in the human body. The best known of the hemp-based cannabinoids is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the plant’s primary psychoactive element. Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t make you high, but research into this previously little-lauded extract has shown it to be effective in treating a range of afflictions, from pain, inflammation, and arthritis to insomnia, anxiety, and even psychosis.
Following clinical trials that looked at childhood epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, CBD-based prescription medicines are now available for the treatment of these conditions in the US. Even the Mayo Clinic has expressed optimism about the drug’s potential for therapeutic use in treating pain, inflammation and mood disorders, with MD of Integrative Medicine, Brent Bauer, commenting that it had shown promise in early-phase trials.
Dr Elizabeth Appiah-Kusi is a psychologist who researches CBD and its role in treating psychosis. One of her recent studies focused on people who were at risk of developing psychosis and were issued with either a placebo or a 600mg CBD dose for a period of three weeks.
The results were astounding. Appiah-Kusi and her team found that CBD was “able to normalise the dysfunction seen in certain brain areas normally associated with psychosis.” The discovery of CBD’s healing potential is an exciting development in the medical field, she says. “We don’t really have treatments [for psychosis] that are as effective as we had hoped, and they often come with very unpleasant side effects. It seems that CBD is relatively safe and well tolerated.”
Pain researcher and chair of the US Arthritis Society, Dr Jason Mcdougall, is equally positive about the new kid on the medical block. “There is evidence to show that it can be effective in alleviating arthritis pain as well as inflammation and fatigue,” he says.
