SA to import maize amid drought
While South Africa battles the latest heatwave, Grain SA says the country will have to import millions of tons of maize due to the severe drought.
NATIONAL NEWS - While South Africa battles the latest heatwave, Grain SA says the country will have to import millions of tons of maize due to the severe drought.

Drought stricken farms are unable to meet local demand of 10 million tons of maize this year, as well as the added two million tons destined for export.

Grain SA economist Corne Louw says grain farmers will only be able to deliver half of what’s needed according to their estimates.

“If we calculate planting with the yields they had last year, we get to more or less 5 million tonnes for production. That leaves us with a five million tonnes deficit for our local consumption.”
