Former DA ward councillor and current PA member Brendon Adams writes:
I wish to once again clarify the facts surrounding my recent interactions with the municipality, particularly in light of attempts to mislead the public and politicise what is, at its core, an administrative matter.
I initially contacted the municipality after receiving a notice alleging illegal building works on my property.
I then made several follow-up calls simply to obtain updates and ensure the matter was being handled properly.
At the same time, I also requested progress reports on complaints I had lodged regarding individuals aligned with the Democratic Alliance who had reported me.
What is deeply troubling is that while my matter appears to have been acted on with urgency, the complaints I submitted have seemingly not received the same attention. This raises serious concerns about fairness, consistency and whether municipal processes are being applied equally to everyone. What should count for one should count for the other.
Instead of addressing these legitimate concerns, certain DA figures now appear more interested in playing politics and attempting to change the narrative by claiming that I was the one who reported people in Peddie Muller Street.
This is a clear attempt to deflect from the real issue - namely, why complaints against their own associates are not being pursued with the same vigour.
The public deserves accountability, not selective enforcement or political spin. Municipal governance must be impartial, transparent and fair to all residents, regardless of political affiliation.
Adams' letter refers to an article published in George Herald last week, "Adams ontken bewerings te midde van tussenverkiesing". The article reports that the DA had questioned Adams' intentions after it emerged that his name and cellphone number were linked to about five informal structures he had allegedly reported to the municipality as illegal extensions over the past two months.
The letter was sent to DA constituency head Venolea Fortuin and George Mayor Browen Johnson for their comment. The DA declined to comment.
