GARDEN ROUTE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The Carpe Musicam! Quintet - the pandemic child of the Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir - will be performing in Mossel Bay for the first time on 8 May in the Dias Museum at 19:00. 

The group comprises some of the orchestra's principal players and approaches the music in the same passionate yet accessible manner as its parent group.

This intimate musical portrayal of the suffering, death, resurrection and the ascension of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit seeks to illustrate the momentous journey through familiar music in new and interesting settings. It is the brain-child of pianist, organist, choir leader and orchestra manager, Elsabe Barkhuizen.

Beginning with a rousing rendition of Hosanna by Paul Barker, the five musicians weave a tapestry of tone, melody and harmony as they use their skills to provide just the right atmosphere for each stop on the road to Calvary and then beyond. O Sacred Head Once Wounded gets a new lease on life when combined with a Bach Sicilienne in a duo for violin and clarinet.

Favourite hymns get reborn in fresh arrangements - some stirring and some more sombre. Were You There? with a slow gospel groove is a genuine audience-pleaser, while violinist Cherith Bain's take on Amazing Grace has received great acclaim.
