The concert will take place in George on Saturday, 16 July at the George Civic Centre,
This unique musical collaboration will feature a finely programmed selection of classical, contemporary, Afrikaans, opera, jazz and cabaret styles, combined with the heavenly voices of the current Children’s Choir, and backed by a massed reunion choir of past members of the South Cape Children’s Choir, from 1996 to the present.
The concept of bringing such a group of well-known artists together to perform in a benefit concert for the Children’s Choir, is an initiative of the South Cape Music Foundation, the management company overseeing the South Cape Children’s Choir, the South Cape Symphony Orchestra, and the George Arts Festival.
Foundation chairman, Pieter Pepler, explains: "The purpose of the benefit is to raise funds for deserving young musicians and singers from all communities in the Southern Cape to experience ongoing performance opportunities in music on a national and international level. This includes future projects in cultural tourism and exchange programmes in music. When the Foundation approached performing artists to discuss the viability of supporting such a cause, their response was overwhelming."
Topping the list of performers who have thrown their weight behind the Children’s Choir "Night with the Stars” benefit concert, are well-known performers Lesley-Rae Dowling, Petronel Baard, Innes and Greta Benade, Michael Lindt, opera group Appassionata, accompanied by Olive Sandilands, Gerda Kinsey (well known in KwaZulu-Natal) the cabaret duo, Rouge, Anton Gemmer, LeRoy Botha and Voldi George.
A highlight of the evening’s festivities, which will include tables hosted by the artists themselves, as well as seats for the public, will be the combined singing of Greta Benade’s George 200 Anthem in the style of Michael Jackson’s We are the World.
Sponsors of the Night with the Stars event are Group Editors, Elite Catering, Tokkie Nel Jewellery, and Wedding and Catering.
Corporate sponsors and individuals are invited to buy tables for R1500 (10 guests at R150 per person) or donate gifts for fundraiser auctioning, by contacting Ma-rilize Larmour at 082-599-9291.
The Children’s Choir will also be auctioning off its highly talented young Grade 11 accompanist from York High School, Throy Petersen, to the highest bidder in exchange for hosting a private house concert with members of the Children’s Choir.
Balcony tickets for the public are available at R80 per person. Tickets are on sale at PNA in York Street and Upstairs at Harry’s.
