GEORGE NEWS - The talent of local children and their motivating art teachers shines through in the exhibition currently cascading down the walls of the Sayers Art Gallery in the George Museum.
The Friends of the George Museum invites all citizens of George to view the gigantic exhibition of artworks created by many art-loving children of the South Cape region.
The exhibit is the culmination of the 2019 Visual Arts Celebration organised by the regional staff of the Eden and Central Karoo Education Department.
All schools of the Garden Route and Central Karoo, from the coast inland to Beaufort West, were invited to submit entries. There will be a prize-giving evening in mid-July.
Approximately 40 prizes will be funded by a donation from the Bella Smith Arts and Culture Foundation and two special merit prizes will be awarded by the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava).
To demonstrate the commitment to arts and culture in the Cape Province Education Department, many of the leaders in government departments and celebrities will travel to George to present the prizes and congratulations.
'Every picture tells a story'
The theme of the competition is "Every Picture Tells a Story". Each creation is accompanied by an explanation or the story behind it. The works are in the form of paintings and sculptures. The standard is extraordinary and speaks of extremely creative ideas. The skill and execution of the works leave the viewer with all sorts of emotions. The three-dimensional qualities, the ideas, the talent of all the children are outstanding this year. Comments from those who have already visited the gallery are positive. Some learners have produced paintings far ahead of their years, such as the series of "dotty" paintings by St Paul's Primary, George East that give the impression that learners are now studying the works of French artists Seurat or Signac.
The interpretative pieces make for deep insight. It is also obvious that children today are fully aware of their inner feelings, their surroundings and the state of our planet.
It is also obvious, when viewing this exhibition, that the area has a wealth of gifted art teachers, the unsung heroes of our community.
