GEORGE NEWS - The Carpe Musicam! orchestra will play a selection of favourite carols in St Mark's Cathedral on Friday and Saturday (24 and 25 November) at 19:00. The audience will be encouraged to add their voices to the already sixty strong group of singers and instrumentalists.
There will also be a few instrumental delights and the full choir and orchestra will be in attendance. In selected items, the new rhythm group from Thembalethu Baptist Church (who will begin lessons on "real" instruments early next year) will be adding extra sparkle with a variety of percussion instruments.
Tenors
Local tenors Hannes Wannenburg and Tinus Badenhorst will perform Adolphe Adams' famous O, Holy Night in duet, with the choir joining in for the chorus. They will be joined by Alwyn Janse van Rensburg for an atmospheric rendition of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel arranged for a tenor trio, strings and alto saxophone, ably played by Ronell Kruger. Also of interest will be the choral arrangement of the hymn Uit Droë Hout Spring Lewe accompanied by recorder trio, cello and harpsichord.
Tickets
Orchestra director Norman Carless noted that seats will not be reserved for these concerts, so it is suggested one buys tickets from the cathedral office on weekday mornings, or from Elsabé on 073 857 2952, or come early to purchase at the door. Tickets are priced at R80 for adults and R20 for learners.
Refreshments will be for sale during the interval in aid of the Anglican Womens' Fellowship. As always it would be wise to bring a cushion for personal comfort, although the conductor has promised that you will not be doing too much sitting. . .
Diary note:
As their last concert of the year Carpe Musicam! will give a performance called "Angels all Around Celebration of Christmas Music" on Saturday 16 December in the Transport Museum, starting at 19:00. The museum will be open from 18:00 for those who wish to spend some extra time among the historical puffing billies. The tickets are priced at R80 for adults and R20 for learners.
