GEORGE NEWS - The Market Community Theatre in George will hold its very first fundraising show, Fresh from Uzbekistan with singer, songwriter and, pianist Emile Minnie, on Friday 14 July.
Tickets cost R100 per person and can be bought through Quicket (https://qkt.io/Spx9Ep). All funds will go towards the installation of a new carpet and paint for the restoration of the theatre.
"Literally it is a shell of a theatre. It is not pretty, but that is exactly what we are trying to do - we are trying to restore the theatre to its former glory," said coordinator Heather Stead. "We are currently begging and borrowing equipment, but it is exciting, because we have started."
Emile Minnie
Minnie is currently living and working in Uzbekistan in Central Asia. He will give the audience a glimpse into the world he currently shares with Uzbeks and Russians, and will perform favourites from his previous albums.
Minnie is well known in South Africa, having toured the country with his piano.
In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, Emile left South Africa to teach music in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and he has been there ever since.
In July Minnie will be in South Africa for a couple of weeks to reconnect with friends and fans.
More to come
Other fundraisers lined up include Christmas in July, directed by Carina Beukes (date to be announced), and a dancing and singing show on 2 August with Abigail Geldenhuys Academy of Ballet, gumboot dancers of Siyakhona Youth Group and Christelle Smit's Dance School.
"The tickets for each show is R100 a person. We've had very good support so far," said Stead.
"We can seat 110 people, and have sold 20 tickets so far [on Monday]. People can even buy a ticket and make it available for others should they be out of town."
