GEORGE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - Carpe Musicam!'s next concert series will be presented over the weekend of 17, 18 and 19 May in George, Mossel Bay and Knysna respectively. Choruses, Concertos.. and Carmen! features only local talent who are active members of the Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir. In George, the concert will take place at Eden Place on Friday 17 May at 19:30.
Conductor Norman Carless is interested to see if the support for a more classical concert will be as great as for their previous show - a Celtic-themed event which attracted more than 900 music lovers to Eden Place and another 400 to the Knysna concert.
"There will be opera and solo favourites that are seldom performed in our area. The Slave Chorus from Nabucco and Nessun Dorma are two that spring immediately to mind," said Carless. "Our version of Nessun Dorma will be rather special as it features the entire choir instead of just a solo tenor. The climax is breathtaking."
There will not only be classical music on the programme. The love theme from the film Out of Africa has been blended with the slow movement from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to create a unique item of serene beauty. Local matric student Marianne Holm will be performing the solo clarinet part.
Petite Knysna resident Jolandie du Plessis will rock with the Für Elise Boogie performed on her huge tuba, and the Carmen Fantasy will feature many orchestra members in solo passages. Not to be missed is the violin duet version of the Habanera, with Calvin Steyn and Lesley Bostander.
Tickets can be bought at Akkers Hardware and at the door on the night at R100 for adults (scholars enter free of charge) - cash only. Contact Elsabe on 073 857 2952 for EFT arrangements beforehand.
• To add a sophisticated atmosphere to the proceedings, Carpe Musicam! has teamed up with the Oakhurst George Arts Theatre's Wardrobe and Costume Hire, and are holding a Concours d'Elegance competition at the George event. Entries for the Concours will open on 7 May and will only close at 19:30 on 17 May. Contact Chantal at the wardrobe on 084 518 5366.
