The Easter pageant type music depicts the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ presented in poetry and music.
Many of the pieces are poems by WEG Louw set to music by Dalene Brits, especially for the Bel Canto Choir with pieces also by Schubert, Bizet, Mozart and the celebratory Hallelujah Chorus from Handel. These choral pieces are interspersed with songs by well-known soloists and poems by Dale Stone.
Dalene Brits is widely recognised for her arrangements, compositions and adjudication of choirs in South Africa and was honoured by the ATKV as well as the FAK for her unique contribution to the Afrikaans choral idiom. She was also winner of the ATKV Composer Competition in 2012 and nine of her songs were prescribed for this year's ATKV School Choir competition.
The Bel Canto choir is made up of approximately 35 professional and amateur singers, all with a passion for the sacred music they are singing.
The choir was started in 2010 by Amelia van der Merwe and a group of passionate singers. There is no entrance fee and all are welcome to attend the performances in the George area.
