Guests arrived in their best Roman regalia on Friday 20 June to hear what this year's function in aid of Carpe Diem School had to offer. "Like the previous five Gourmets and Gourmands, this year's event will surpass everyone's wildest expectations. After all, who would not want to spend an evening with the emperor," said event organiser, Francois Ferreira.
This year guests will be transported back in time, all the way to the Roman Empire. Guests will enjoy a five course meal prepared by 20 top-notch culinary establishments in the area. Well-respected tenor Kevin Leo (Little Pavarotti) will entertain guests with his rich vocal repertoire throughout the evening.
Many remember the beautiful diamond donated by Raffaele D'Amato Jewellers for auction during the 2013 Gourmets and Gourmands evening. This year they have once again stepped up to the plate and donated a magnificent necklace currently being designed. Valued at a whopping
R40 000, the necklace will most definitely be one of the highlights of this year's Ancient Roman Gourmets and Gourmands.
Besides this prized piece of jewellery, attendees will have a wide variety of goods to bid on during the evening - among these, a luxury two-night charter on board the Zambezi Queen. As is custom, Ferreira, well-known culinary personality and Roman emperor for the night, will act as auctioneer assisted by Carpe Diem School Headmaster Karools Hauptfleisch.
Thanks to the Gourmets and Gourmands evenings thousands of rands have been raised over the past five years. These funds have ensured that the 282 special needs learners from Carpe Diem School have acquired only the best resources. The learners come from towns across the Southern Cape.
"The ancient Roman poet Horace said, 'Carpe diem! Rejoice while you are alive; enjoy the day; live life to the fullest; make the most of what you have. It is later than you think.' This sounds like an order we can all adhere to; to grab the opportunity to attend a feast with the emperor at the sixth Gourmets and Gourmands and contribute to the lives of those who need our help," concluded Ferreira.
