Top entertainers will descend on George to perform at Kalahari Restaurant and the Bush Lapa Eco Resort near Herold’s Bay. The beach at Herold’s Bay will also be transformed into a football pitch on 21 and 22 December for Futbal Feva, a fun-filled, series of 4-on-4 soccer event for spectators and competitors alike. The fast paced event is owned and run by Shooting Stars. Terra Firma events co-ordinator Werner Rall said it was regrettable that the usual Herold’s Bay Festival (including bikini/beauty competitions) had to be cancelled because the George municipality was demanding R10 000 up front for the use of the beach.
Cream
Both the five-star hotels are offering the cream of the crop of entertainment. To crown their range of excellent entertainment which includes glamorous dinners on Christmas and New Year, Hyatt Regency Oubaai will co-host the Southern Africa Hall of fame Museum opening and dinner.
Fancourt’s exciting festive season programme gets underway on Friday, 17 December and runs until New Year’s Day 2011. Themed ‘Festival of Lights’ this family event will also be open to day visitors. South Africa’s top band Prime Circle will perform at Fancourt on Sunday, 19 December with a sunset concert on the rolling lawns of the estate. Picnic baskets will be available. Get into the Christmas spirit on 23 December with Carols by Candlelight followed by a Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th, and Christmas lunch on the 25th.
Local talent
The Battle of the Band talent contest at the George show grounds will keep everyone entertained on Friday, 17 December at 19:00, showcasing local bands and solo artists.
Danie Niehaus is staging several concerts at his theatre, the Bosteater (built single handedly by him) in the Karatara area. See the holiday guide for more information.
Street lights
The George municipality’s annual lights festival is staged this weekend in York Street, on Saturday.
The George Arts Theatre has the favourite musical Annie lined up as favourite for adults and children.
The lunch time concerts on 15, 16 and 17 December from 13:10 to 13:50 at the NG Church in Courtenay Street will set a Christmas atmosphere.
Children’s holiday programmes include the George Holiday Resort where there is ten pin bowling and a new pizza/pasta restaurant. At Fancourt the Kids Summer Carnival holiday activities including Slip & Slide, beach volleyball, putt-putt, Gold Cup horse racing, and more.
For outdoor adrenaline driven people paragliding and scuba diving can be booked through adventure operators and for the more sedate there are several markets to be visited.
Exciting line-up
Kalahari Theatre has comedians Casper de Vries and Barry Hilton lined up as well as Etienne Steyn, Karen Zoid, Mike McCullugh and his band and Idols winner Elvis Blue.
Bush Lapa has spitbraais and favourites like Elvis Blue, Dozi, Karen Ferreira, Jakkie Louw, Fredi Nest, Andriette Norman, Adam Tas, Jovan and Thelma and the Dixie Hillbilly Trio performing. Tickets can be obtained through Computicket.
To sum it up - there is no need to go seeking excitement elsewhere - George has got it all - even the seven rugby tournament.
