GEORGE NEWS FLASH - The DA has dispatched a letter to George Mayor Charles Standers asking him to explain why he should not be suspended from the party.
This follows after a case of assault was laid against Standers by his wife Estie late Monday evening (1 February).
The George Herald has decided to reveal his identity as, due to his high political rank, the case is in the public’s interest.
The politician allegedly assaulted his wife in front of their six year old daughter, at their home in Lavalia. A case of assault was opened at the Conville Police Station shortly after the incident.
Once Standers receives the DA’s letter, he has 24 hours to provide reasons why he should not be suspended from all party political activities. If suspended he will continue his duties as mayor, but will not be able to attend the DA caucus meeting.
The ANC has asked for his instant dismissal.
Rumours that Estie Standers has withdrawn the charge against her husband are rife with many people speculating on social media. However, the police has just confirmed that the investigation into the matter continues and as soon as it is concluded, the docket will be given to the senior state prosecutor who will decide whether or not to prosecute.
