GEORGE SAILING NEWS - A very light south-westerly breeze discouraged many members from taking part in George Lakes Yacht Club's sailing races on Island Lake last weekend.
Contrary to the norm, the youth fleet of four Optimists exceeded those in the senior fleet, which just had three boats. Only two races could be completed in the conditions, with the breeze getting even lighter in the second race.
In the first race Kyle Koeries succeeded in opening a lead of over a minute ahead of Conrad Holm at the finish, with Jean Paul Buys and Thomas Lawa trailing a further three minutes behind.
In the second race Holm found a puff of wind soon after the start to open up a big lead. Thomas secured a safe second place, with Koeries and Buys behind.
The youth fleet was sailing for the Tom's Tavern trophy, the first races of which were sailed back in September. Conrad Holm was in the lead after that day. Scoring together with last weekend's race, he wins this trophy for the 2018/2019 season.
In the senior fleet, the Fireball of David Laing and Matthew de Villiers was first over the line in the first race. Second place was taken by the GP14 of Evelyn Osborne and Diane Parker. In the light conditions of race two, the Fireball again was not able to extend a lead over the Laser of Malcolm Osborne, finishing just one minute ahead. Osborne was the winner of this race on handicap.
The senior fleet was sailing for the Realty Homenet Trophy. Scoring the series together with last weekend's races, David Laing wins this trophy for the 2018/2019 season.
