SAILING NEWS - The first races for the Presidents Trophy (senior fleet) and for the season-long Junior Championship series took place at the George Lakes Yacht Club last Sunday.
There were 14 starters in the race with just two Optimists comprising the junior fleet.
Jean Paul Buys was the leading Optimist, ahead of Aydin Gething. In the senior fleet the Dart 18, sailed by Hans Delport, left the rest of the fleet far behind, finishing nearly five minutes ahead of the next finisher, Matthew de Villiers.
De Villiers, on a Dabchick, was sailing against the Laser of Henry Paine and was able to stay with the potentially faster craft. These two sailed around the course neck and neck, with the Dabchick crossing the finish line just ahead. This gave the race win to De Villiers, ahead of Paine and the Dabchicks of Luke de Villiers and Jordyn Soldin.
There were three retirements from the race due to boat damage.
