GEORGE RUGBY NEWS - Festival rugby is back in George. Outeniqua Park will host the inaugural George Tens Rugby Festival on the weekend of 7 and 8 December.
In an unprecedented move to bring an event of this magnitude back to the Garden Route, the George Municipality has partnered with strategic stakeholders from the private sector to bring this exciting brand back to the Southern Cape.
Speaking to the two men behind the project - Councillor Dirk Wessels of the George Municipality and Ig van der Merwe, the chief organiser, it is evident that this event is about more than just rugby.
"Our goal is to place George back on the map as one of South Africa's top host cities for sports festivals of this nature. Through this hugely popular brand we can create a platform to stimulate economic growth, generate revenue and encourage a tourism influx."
The SA Rugby Legends have also confirmed their commitment to the event. Apart from participating, they will also be doing clinics throughout George leading up the festival to further the social development of rugby in the Garden Route.
The George Tens Rugby Festival will see 48 teams made up of ten players a side, compete in social, veterans and semi-professional categories over the two days. Live entertainment at Outeniqua Park will contribute to a fun and exciting festival of rugby to be enjoyed by players and fans alike.
