GEORGE NEWS - The Southern Cape men’s hockey team became the first team in the modern era to win the SA Country Districts hockey title three years successively on Astro.
Apart from Southern Cape only two other teams, SADF (1986, ‘87, ‘88) and Natal (1995, ‘96, ’97) could achieve this, but that was in the pre-Astro era.
Southern Cape has appeared in the past nine successive finals from 2002 to 2010 and has won it on six of these occasions.
Three members of the Southern Cape team, Marc van Staden, Andrew Moolman and Kevin Damons, were selected to represent the SA Country Districts team at the IPT (B) tournament to be held at Port Elizabeth from 23 to 28 August.
Another honour for Southern Cape hockey was that the title of Player of the Tournament is shared between Southern Cape’s Kevin Damons and Kyle Dickson of KZN Coastals. The first SA Country Districts Hockey Tournament took place in 1975 hosted by Northerns and represented by 12 teams around South Africa. Southern Cape has won the tournament seven times since the inception, making them one of the most successful teams in the country.
This year’s tournament was hosted by Mpumalanga Hockey Association at Uplands College, White River from 28 June to 3 July. The Southern Cape results are: SCAPE 5, Mpumalanga 1; SCAPE 3, Limpopo 0; SCAPE 0, KZN Coastal 1; SCAPE 1, Northerns 0; SCAPE 3, Eastern Gauteng 0; semi final - SCAPE 3, KZN Inland 1; final - SCAPE 2, Southern Gauteng 0.
