GEORGE NEWS - A Grade 9 learner of York High, Cayden Bean, was awarded two gold medals for his ballet performance in the Cape Town Eisteddfod, and Level 7 silver with double distinction for his participation in the American Academy of Ballet Performance Awards.
On both occasions Cayden represented the Knysna-based Sidwell Roman School of Ballet.
In the Cape Town Eisteddfod, Cayden received two diplomas (85 to 100%) for the categories Own Choice Classical Solo 14 years, and Own Choice Demi-Character Solo 14 years, after which he made the finals and received two gold medals.
Cayden started dancing as an eight-year-old when he joined the Abbi Geldenhuys Academy of Ballet.
He has danced with the academy for several years, and has been awarded distinctions for all his Cecchetti exams so far.
Two years ago he joined the Sidwell Roman School of Ballet in Knysna. When Cayden started his high school career at York High School in 2021, he furthered his dancing skills and love for dance by taking dance as a subject.
"His level of excellence, commitment and discipline resulted in his selection as a member of York High's Dance First Team," reads a statement by York High. "At York, he is taught by Linda Johnson in jazz. This young man is an amazing and talented dancer, and furthermore excels in public speaking. We are very proud of this young man and are excited about what the future holds for him."
